VW Crafter & MAN TGE: After-Refill Countdown Still Active
Topped up your AdBlue but the dashboard still says “No Start in 500 miles”? You’re not alone. VW Crafter and MAN TGE vans often hold this countdown even when the tank is full. Here’s why it happens, how to reset it properly, and what to do if it refuses to clear.
Why the Countdown Doesn’t Reset Automatically
The AdBlue system in the Crafter and MAN TGE relies on a level sensor inside the tank and a dosing control module. When you refill, the ECU expects a change in both tank pressure and fluid quality. If either reading is missing, the countdown remains.
Common causes include:
- Crystallised float or stuck level sensor
- Air trapped in the AdBlue line after refill
- Out-of-sync SCR control module after low voltage
- Fault codes P207F or P20E8 stored in memory
How the System Checks Fluid Levels
The tank sensor uses a capacitive probe to measure AdBlue depth and conductivity. When the ECU detects a stable voltage change for at least 30 seconds, it confirms a refill and resets the countdown. If the signal is noisy or the module is still performing diagnostics, the light won’t go out.
Quick DIY Checks Before Calling for Help
- Turn ignition on (without starting) for 30 seconds after filling.
- Ensure at least 5 L of AdBlue has been added — smaller amounts may not trigger detection.
- Start the van and let it idle for 10 minutes; the SCR system needs a warm-up cycle to re-evaluate level readings.
- Drive above 40 mph for 15 minutes — the system confirms dosing at cruising speed.
If the countdown still remains, the fault is in the sensor, pump, or software calibration.
Common Related Fault Codes
- P207F – Reductant Quality Performance
- P20E8 – Low Pressure in the Dosing System
- P13DF – Heater Circuit Fault (in cold weather)
- P204F – SCR Efficiency Below Threshold
If you see any of these stored, the ECU will not clear the countdown until they’re resolved. Even clearing the codes manually won’t help until the system passes its self-test.
Our Diagnostic Approach
At AdBlue Specialist, we use manufacturer-level tools to interrogate the SCR module and force a proper AdBlue refill recognition cycle. We check:
- Live level sensor voltage and resistance
- Pump priming and pressure during dosing
- Temperature data from the heated line
- Quality sensor calibration and NOx feedback
Once confirmed, we reset the countdown via the ECU and verify that the system doses normally during a road test.
When Software Correction Is Needed
In some vans, especially those with older SCR firmware, the module fails to register a refill even when everything works mechanically. In that case, we can perform a safe AdBlue reset or delete to remove false countdowns permanently. This method edits the ECU software through the OBD port — no cutting or wiring changes.
Typical Workshop Scenario
A 2019 VW Crafter 2.0 TDI arrived with “AdBlue empty — no start in 200 miles” even after a full refill. Diagnostic data showed the level sensor reading 6 %, fixed. After removing the pump module and cleaning the crystallised float, the sensor read correctly, and the countdown cleared immediately. No parts replaced.
When P204F or P207F Appears Together
If your Crafter shows both a countdown and P207F or P20E8, the ECU has also detected poor dosing or pressure loss. The refill will not reset until those faults are cleared with a scan tool.
Preventing Future Issues
- Use sealed AdBlue containers; keep fluid below 25 °C.
- Never top up with the ignition on — it confuses the level sensor.
- Run the van weekly in cold weather to circulate heated lines.
- Have an SCR system check before winter.

Still Seeing the Countdown?
If your VW Crafter or MAN TGE continues to warn “No Start” after refill, don’t replace parts at random. We can identify whether the issue is the tank sensor, pump pressure, or software misread — and fix it properly on-site.
